Street names barely exist out there. This is how to bring anyone to the right gate the first time. 5 October 2026 · 4 min read Villena’s municipal term covers 345.6 km², the second largest in the province of Alicante. Besides the town, it holds fifteen settlements: Casas de Menor, Casas de Cabanes, Casas de Jordán, Cascante, El Morrón, Las Chozas, La Gloria, La Encina, La Puentecilla, Las Tiesas, Las Virtudes, La Zafra, San Bernabé, Santa Eulalia and Sierra de Salinas. Some are a cluster of houses; La Encina is a railway village 18 km out, near the borders with Valencia and Albacete. What they have in common is that a postal address rarely gets anyone to your door. If you live in one, or own a house in the campo between them, the way you give directions decides how fast help arrives, ours included. ## Why the address is not enough Out of town, houses are often registered by plot, by the name of the paraje or by a kilometre on a road, not by a street and number. Satnavs do what they can with that, which is usually to deliver you to the middle of the paraje. In the dark, a pair of identical gates two hundred metres apart is enough to lose ten minutes. ## Do this once, today - **Stand at your gate and save the location** on your phone. Name it “home gate”, not “home”. The pin of the house itself may be fifty metres up a track that the satnav cannot see. - **Write a two-line description**, ready to paste: the pedanía, the road you turn off, and what the gate looks like. For example: “Las Virtudes, second track after the sanctuary on the left, green gate with two stone pillars.” - **Share both with anyone who might need to find you**: family, the person who keeps a spare key, the delivery firm, and us when you ring. - **Put a number or a name on the gate** if there is not one. It is the cheapest security device there is. ## When you ring 1. Say the pedanía first, then the road. 2. Send the pin on WhatsApp while we are still on the call. 3. Tell us if the gate is locked as well as the house, and whether there are dogs. 4. If it is dark, switch on the outside light or leave the car headlights on at the gate. We give you an honest estimate of how long it will take to reach you from where we are. From the town to La Encina is a different call from the town to Las Virtudes, and we say so. ## Owners who live abroad If you are away for months, leave the pin and the description with whoever holds your spare key.
