# Old doors on the hillside of El Rabal, and what is inside them

El Rabal is one of Villena’s oldest quarters, built up the hillside over a century and a half, with some houses cut back into the rock. Its doors rarely sit square, and that changes how their locks behave.

El Rabal grew up around the church of Santa María, on the slope west of the walled town. For centuries it was a scatter of houses and workshops outside the walls. Then, from the middle of the nineteenth century, Villena’s population grew fast and the hillside filled up: houses climbed the slope, quarries opened to supply the stone, and some families dug their homes straight into the limestone. By the middle of the twentieth century the quarter was fully built.

What you see today is, as the local historians put it, a mixture of buildings and street layouts from several periods. That is the charm of it. It is also why the doors behave the way they do.

## Why the doors here are never quite square

A door works when its frame is square and stays square. On a hillside, three things work against that:

- **The house has settled.** Walls built on a slope, on rock or on fill, move a little over the decades. The frame goes with them, and the top corner of the door drops on the lock side.
- **The frame was fitted to the opening, not the other way round.** In older houses, and above all in the ones cut into the rock, the opening came first and the carpenter made the frame fit it.
- **Several hands have been at it.** A door from one century, a frame repaired in another, a cylinder added in this one.

The result is a door that closes, but only just, with the latch or the bolt rubbing on its way into the keep.

## How that shows up in the lock

Most of what people describe as a broken lock in houses like these is not a broken lock:

- The key turns only if you **push or lift the door** at the same time. The bolt is pressing against the keep, and the lock cannot throw it.
- The key turns stiffly in **winter and freely in summer**. The timber shrinks and swells, and the gap the bolt needs opens and closes with it.
- The door **locks from inside but not from outside**, or the other way round. The cylinder is worn on one side, or the lock was fitted slightly off its line.

None of these is fixed by a new lock. They are fixed by adjusting the keep, packing or easing the hinges, or freeing the edge of the door, and then checking the lock works without help.

## If you are shut out

The same misalignment that makes a door hard to lock makes it harder to open from outside. A door that has dropped onto its bolt holds the bolt in place. Part of opening it without damage is taking that load off first: lifting the door slightly while the lock is worked. It is slower than on a modern flat door, and it is why we ask what kind of house it is when you ring.

## Keeping the old door

El Rabal sits next to the old town that was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1968, and many of its doors are worth keeping. An old box lock can usually be opened, repaired and kept in use. If you want more security, a modern cylinder can often be added to the door alongside it, without changing how the door looks from the street. It is worth asking the town hall before changing anything on a façade.

## What to tell us when you call

- That the house is in El Rabal, and the nearest church, square or wider street. Some of the streets are steep and narrow, and the last stretch may be on foot.
- Whether it is the **old lock** or a **modern cylinder** that will not turn.
- Whether the key turns if you push the door. That one answer tells us most of what is wrong.

If it turns out the lock really is worn, the next step is [a cylinder change or a repair](https://locksmithvillena.es/lock-change-villena/), booked for a day that suits you.
