On one visit we go round all of them. - **The track gate** Usually a padlock or a gate lock exposed to every frost. We free it, change it or fit one made to live outdoors. We change locks on gates; we do not make or weld the gates themselves. - **The house door** Opened if you are shut out, its cylinder changed if keys have gone astray, and its fit checked after the winter, when doors here tend to bind or gap. - **The store or bodega** Big timber doors with old locks, often older than anything else on the land. Many can be kept and repaired; the guide on vineyard stores says when. - **Sheds, pump houses and back doors** The padlocks and small locks nobody checks until the day they will not open. Worth a look on the same visit. ## The countryside here is big, high and cold - **345.6 km²** Villena’s municipal term, the second largest in the province, with fifteen settlements outside the town. La Encina alone is 18 km away. - **4,185 ha** Of vineyard in the term, with olives and almonds alongside, and the same crops round Beneixama, Cañada and Camp de Mirra. Every plot has a store and a gate. - **697 m** Biar’s height, where snow can reach 30 cm in exceptional years. Outdoor locks and padlocks up the valley have the hardest winter of all. ## Before you close the house for the winter - Leave the gate padlock locked but not forced: a shackle under strain freezes worse. - A drop of graphite or a dry lock lubricant in each cylinder. Not oil, which thickens in the cold. - Decide who holds a key while you are away, and write it down. - If a door already binds in October, it will bind more in January. Have it adjusted now. Do you cut it off? Only if it cannot be freed, and only once you have shown it is your property. A seized padlock can often be released and kept; if not, it is removed and replaced with one meant for outdoor use. ### We only come in summer. Can you check everything before we arrive? Yes, if someone can let us in or you leave a key with a neighbour you trust. We check each lock on the property, tell you what needs doing and the price, and only do the work you approve. ### There is no street address. How will you find the house? With a location pin on WhatsApp. Name the pedanía or the nearest road as well, and describe the gate. That is how most houses outside the town are found. ### Can you make us a new gate or bars for the windows? No, we are locksmiths, not metalworkers: we do not make or weld gates, grilles or railings.
